Lethal X-ray machine at dentists: Health experts race to track down killer scanner

Dentist received an urgent warning over a hand-held X-ray scanner, which might be lethal. These cheap X-ray scanners, they cost 200 pounds instead of 4000 pounds, have more than 10 times the normal level of radiation. This extreme high radiation can cause cancer and organ damage. The devices are available on internet sites like E-bay. It is hard to tell if a device is dangerous, because they look the same as normal devices, and therefore is it not known how many patients have been put at risk. Compliance unit manager Bruce Petrie said: “Anyone in the room when these machines are being used would be exposed. They are dangerous, deadly machines.”

This is a very dangerous situation. As a patient you have no idea what kind of x-ray device is being used. I think dentists are responsible for the devices they use. If you buy a device that only costs 200 pounds, you can tell it is not a proper device. In my opinion the dentists should be punished because I think it is clear that they do not care enough about their patients. They fulfill a role as a doctor and they have certain responsibilities.  There should be more supervision at doctors who use devices that can be harmful to patients.

  1. This is indeed a very interesting topic. I agree with you that these cheap x-rays are dangerous but one thing you did not mention was that there should be,yearly or even more often, inspection done on the equipment that a dentist use. Financially seen, could this leave the government with a lot of problems.
