Miranda Series 3 Episode 3

Original airing date: 14 January 2013

Miranda is a woman who is not an ordinary women and everything she does seems to fail. In this episode Miranda has to take care of her mother for five days in her apartment. She is really annoyed of her mother, but when she finds her first grey hair it looks like she is losing it. She thinks that she has not accomplished anything in her life, and she decides to do nice things from now on. However, on the first day of her new life she becomes ill. She does not get any attention until she is recovering, and then she pretends to be ill.

The first time I saw Miranda I was not really enthusiastic about it. However, when I saw this episode, I really thought it was funny. I had to laugh out loud for a couple of times and I was disappointed when the episode was finished. The fact that everybody, but especially her mother, makes fun of Miranda makes it very amusing because Miranda is really crazy. Besides the show was funny, I actually learned some things about the everyday life as well, like certain words they use.

Britain’s Next Top Model Season 8 Episode 13

Original airing date: 04 October 2012

The show started with fourteen contestants. This was the final episode where the final three contestants tried to win Britain’s Next Top Model. The show began with a photo-shoot with a beautiful horse. The three girls had to pose together with the horse to make some nice photos. In the last part of the show, the two finalists had to walk on a runway during a fashion show. Elle Macpherson presented the show and Tyson Beckford, Whitney Port and Julien MacDonald were judges. Not all the judges agreed, but in the end Letitia won the show.

I did not know this show existed, otherwise I would have start seeing it a long time ago. I always love to watch America’s Next Top Model, and I thought that I would love this show as well. I do like this show, but it is not quite the same as ANTM. The judges were a lot nicer, they gave tips to the contestants and the most important difference is that the participants are a lot nicer than the girls in ANTM. These girls were nice to each other and Emma was happy for Letitia when she became the second best. It surprised me that the whole show was nicer, but I really liked it.

The Weakest Link

Original airing date: 21 December

The Weakest Link is a TV program where contestants answer questions to win money. Each contestant gets a question and when he or she answers it right, the whole team collects money. However, they can loose the money if someone gives a wrong answer before they “banked” the money. At the end of each round the contestants can eliminate another contestant. In the end of the program the two finalists must both answer five questions. The one who has the most questions correct, wins the money. Anne Robinson presents the program.

I think it is a very nice show to watch. I know it was once broadcast in the Netherlands as well, but I never watched it here. In the beginning it took me some effort to understand what they were saying, as they talk very fast. Nevertheless, after some time I got used to the speed of the lines. I like the fact that I can actually learn something as I am watching TV. I can imagine that it is very hard to decide if you want to bank the money. If you give the wrong answer, the money is lost, and when you give the right answer, the amount of money you receive could be a lot higher.

David Cameron: UK could drift towards EU exit

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-21076219

David Cameron would give a speech today about the role the UK has in Europe, however, the speech is postponed due to the circumstances in Algeria. Parts of his speech have been released and it shows that Cameron wants a positive vision for the future of the European Union. A future in which Britain wants, and should want, to play a committed and active part. A lot of people in Britain wants to leave the EU because their taxes are spend to save countries on the other side of the continent.

I am very curious about what David Cameron wants to say about the relation of the UK with Europe. The UK has a very big role in the EU, and the economy could get worse for other countries if they decide to leave the EU. People are frustrated in the UK because they have to pay a lot to save other countries, which is totally understandable in my opinion. It is also understandable that he cancelled the speech, as there are also British hostages involved in Algeria.

The Queen’s Christmas speech

This year the broadcast was recorded in 3D for the first time. Before the Queen starts with her speech, you see a music play in the ballroom of Buckingham Palace. When the Queen begins, she says that the Diamond Jubilee and how it was celebrated, was memorable for her and her family. She talks about the strength of fellowship and friendship during celebrations of the Jubilee, but also during the Olympic Games. Thereafter she tells that Christmas is a time for coming together, however she talks about those who cannot be together due to service as well.  The broadcast ends with a carol.
I think many people like the Christmas speech of the Queen, because it does not happen a lot that she talks about her own views. I did not like the music play in the beginning, I was glad when they stopped playing simply because it is not my music style. However, I did like the carol in the end. I  can imagine that those women who were performing, were very nervous. Although the text was very good, I found it hard to stay awake. In my opinion the Queen talks very boring. Overall it was a neat broadcast.

Extreme anorexic who is appalled to be a role model

Valeria Levitin is the thinnest woman in the world as she her weight is just four stone (25 kilo). Her body should teach people what damage eating disorders can do with a human body. However, Valeria says that she has received fan mail from girls who want to look just like her. She developed her eating disorder as a teenager, when her mother was afraid Valeria would grow up obese. Valeria, who is trying to gain weight said: “The best cure I ever found was when I said to myself, I’m going to recover.”

The fan mail that Valeria Levitin receives is very alarming. It is possible that girls think it is fun to send email to get attention, but I believe there a lot of people who have an illness like anorexia. These people think they look beautiful when they are so skinny as Valeria. In these days, models and celebrities are so skinny, that it looks like this is natural. They make a new standard, which is in general a very unhealthy one. The government should pay more attention to young girls and boys, to make them understand that they look beautiful just the way they are.

Cystic fibrosis woman died with smoker's donor lungs

Jennifer Wederell, who was 27 years old, died of cancer 16 months after she was given the donor lungs of a smoker. Her father said that she would never have agreed the transplant, if she was aware of the condition of the lungs. The hospital has apologised for not giving her the choice of refusing the lungs. However, when there would be a policy of refusing lungs from a smoker, there would be 40% less available lungs for transportation. Jennifer’s father said: “She was dying a death that was meant for someone else.”

I believe that the hospital should have told Jennifer Wederell that the lungs came from a smoker. If she refuses the lungs, she just has to wait longer for new lungs. In this way people know what kind of extra risks there are, and they can decide on their own if they want those extra risks. Obviously, there is no guarantee that there will be better lungs available on time if they refuse the lungs. When somebody refuses the lungs, the next in line will have the same opportunity. In this case, I think that the hospital can be sued for dead by negligence because of not giving all the information.
